My co-worker gave me the best opinion about Death Stranding:

"It's weird. There's no obvious entertainment value, and yet 5 hours went by and I never got bored."

I have a personal theory that the reason Death Stranding is seen as so boring is because when it does action its explosive and weird and exhilirating but the game refuses to make violence its primary language.

90 percent of the time you're just hiking and building things so that every player that comes after you will have an easier hike than you did. And honestly? That's not for everyone, but boy am I glad a game about leaving a better world not for you but for the future somehow got funding.

(ill probably think on this some more after playing it to completion in probably 5 years or when I get a mountain of free time and attention span. Whichever comes first.)
